NBA 07 load times take FOREVER on the PS3
84
Think of the extreme opposite of quick, accelerated, brisk, fast, hasty, and speedy, and that's what you apparently get with Sony's NBA 07 load times for the PS3. Though the video never attempts to start an actual game, the would-be wait appears to be hella-long and flagrantly contrary to how the PS3 cell processor is being pitched as faster. And while this may only be the initial download of content to speed up future game loads, we doubt it given past loading times. The wait for next-gen indefinitely continues...
UPDATE: Fixed EA mistake. Whoops!

What's this about Dead Rising taking ages to load? (It doesn't in particular, get your xbox's drive checked asap!).
And the Blu-Ray load times don't suprise me, it's a new format with fledgling technology and they always start out slow. Another reason the PS3 is bottle necked (the other being the GPU/Shaders/Ram).
I've said it before, the fact that some games will INSTALL stuff from the disc shows that Sony *IS* very worried about loading times, I would HATE to have to wait ages when I play a game (frustrating, it's not the 80's after all) and I especially detest this "installation" crap on a plug-n-play console (supposedly).
PS3 Sure has some great potential but it's amazing how many hoops the gamers and the devs are going to have to jump through to see that potential, and all because Sony wanted to get Blu-Ray accepted quicker by forcing it on the gaming consumer who *REALLY* doesn't need it. I will take faster loading times and multi disc DVD games if it came to it (FF7, Resident Evils etc are multi disc on current and past gen and it never mattered or bothered me; loading times *do* bother me).

when you need to go digging through kotaku, baby your out of touch, the load times are always disgusting on ea games, kay boys and girls. damn this took me FOREVER to write up (20 some odd seconds).

The load time for that game isn't near as long as some of the loads i have witnessed on my 360 !!!!

Blake...You had know idea what you were doing when you wrote this post did ya ??!! Not only were the load times not bad at all, but you made no sense when talking about the cell processor and how the wait for next-gen indeffinately continues. Next-gen starts November 17th, which is only 10 days from now !!!
You guys over here at Joystiq need to get your shit straight.

As the guy had already played the game any installs would have already happened and the game could have been running of the HD!
Its clear load times are an issue because every game supports installs.

"That dude is wrong about Xbox360 controller syncing. I have never used that button on my system. I'm also curious about when you have controllers #5-7. The PS3 controllers feature only 4 lights. What happens?"
Easy;
4 leds; 4 numbers: 1,2,3 & 4
Controller One = Blink led 1
controller two = Blink led 2
controller three = blink led 3
controller four = blink led 4
controller five = blink led 4 & 1
controller six = blink led 4 & 2
controller seven = blink led 4 & 3
4 & 4 is not needed, so, it all fits perfectly. Nice, isn't it?

It was just installing on the hard drive. The video isn't representative of the actual game load times since required data was being transferred to the HDD.

Another brainfart article by Fake Snow. First he claims this is an EA game, then he claims the load times were long (since when is a first install of 25 seconds considered long), and then he claims that the Cell is responsible for loading times (uh nope, drives determine loading times)

"The science of copyrights"
Load times are irrelevant to me. What matters is how long it takes to actually play the game. I don't care if a load time is 2.5 seconds or 25 seconds, if I have to watch 2 minutes of sponsorship. For shame.
Load times are different for each game, too, so nobody can say load times for a specific console are long, or load times are because of the Blu-ray drive. It would be more accurate to say that many games have a long load time because the developers just suck.

I see the issue here.
26 seconds.
6-2 = 4
2+6 = 8
4 is the number that sounds like the word "Death" in chinese, korean and japanese cultures and considered unlucky!
8 is the number of destruction!
This must be the case, since logic clearly has nothing to do with it.

Well, I wouldn't bet too much on the ps3 anyway. And you have to be a fool to waste your money on the 20gb system. Wii will have seemless load times, and an overall better experience. Only reason I'll probably buy a ps3, is for one game that would be totally worth it: Metal Gear Solid 4. But other than that, I'd place my bets on both the Nintendo Wii, and the Xbox 360. That way, I can have a unique experience and have my pick on a nice library of games. third party exclusives will come few and far between sony and microsoft, so whats the point of actually owning both? Heres hoping they actually port MGS4 though so I won't have to blow my money. Whos with me?!

I'm with you Willie G!
Two years ago if you told me I wouldn't be queing for a PS3 on release I would have assumed I would have died in the the meantime but with the release only days away i'm not bothered in the slightest.
The fact is the 360 has better games now and for the forseeable future so why should I spend $800 (by the time i've got the PS3, and extra pad, cables and 2 or 3 games) when there is no reason too right now.
I think buying a WII, Zelda, COD3, Gears of War, and rainbow 6 and still having $300 spare to spend on Christmas is a much better option!

Also, Does anyone else think Blake Snow is being sabotaged by someone that hates him? Seriously, Is it possible that someone writing for a seemingly "respectable" blog site be so biased, uninformed, and idiotic in nearly all of his recent posts? I think the fellas over at Wiifanboy figured out Blake's password.

It seems to load pretty quick.
The guy starts the game, it gives a message that it needs to install a bunch of stuff on the HDD, then it does that in about 20 seconds max.
Then some intro stuff and the menu comes up.
What's "taking forever to load" then ? Nothing was loaded. He installed the game, which didn't take long, and he quit the game once the menu came up.
Slightly off-topic, why on earth did Sony give this guy a PS3 ? He's making a blurry, shaky recording of a 21" (not even flat tube) television in the middle of what sounds like a dining room.

Meh.
That's not too bad. I have PC games that take about the same time. Not great, but not terrible like some people make it sound.
The only bad thing was the crappy camera work. Who in their right mind shoots a PS3 on a 15" TV in the kitchen?
Give it the respect it deserves.

@65- it just seems that 20gb won't be enough for a respectable ammount of games. Then again, you can always uninstall the game for a bit, put another one on there, get bored with it, uninstall that one, put your former game on there, etc. etc. Oh what fun thats gonna be! But you go ahead and buy the 20gb system and fit your total of 4 or 5 games on there. And seriously on the whole video, who cares? get over the shaky cam business.

re: Frexy and the other guy.
the PS3 doesn't support seven controllers any longer. it has been confirmed for months to only support four. the official announcement, I believe, was made at the same time the revised system specs (USB slot configurations and such) were released.
and re: everyone else.
most of the time when Joystiq posts something like this none of you watch the whole video. is the guy who shot it kind of an idiot? the answer is arguably yes. is it a mystery how one of the pre-launch consoles got hooked up over composite connections to what appears to be a fifteen year old seventeen inch CRT? definitely. does it seem likely that the game has already installed to the HDD if the guy in the video comments on having already seen the intro video before? probably. is there in any way enough information available to us in this video to conclude that the PS3 will have bad load times? certainly not.
there are two things that I am curious about, though, and no-one else seemed to pick up on them. one, if there is no bind button on the console, what happens if you're having a system link game with many players? what console will your controller sync to? and two, at 2:08 he reads the onscreen message that says "full 1080p requires an HDMI cable, a native display, and an HDCP input." given that ICT was (presumably) delayed for the next five years, why would a launch title for the PS3 specifically state it requires HDCP compliance for 1080p support?

No surprise here. Long load times is clearly considered irrelevant by the powers that be within Sony. The PSX had horrendous load times, and from what I hear the PS2 isn't much better and the PSP is equally bad.
This isn't a Sony bash because it seems like the Big Three all have persistant problems that they tolerate. Nintendo's ignored design flaw was the horrible screens that they put into their handhelds. From the original Gameboy to the GBA the company clearly believed it was acceptable to release a handheld with a screen that cannot be viewed. When Nintendo finally released their long-overdue lit screens with the GBA-SP and DS they were only of so-so quality. It wasn't until the GBA-SP2 and DS-Lite that Nintendo finally seemed to admit that they got it.
The xbox's big persistant problem is basically the big persistant problem of Microsoft: create products that look impressive on paper and in tech demos but put no effort into ensuring the products work in the real world. Microsoft products are unreliable garbage, and the ridiculously high failure rate of the 360 is probably the company's proudest moment. The corporate policy at Microsoft is to look at the consumer as an early beta tester. I don't see this situation turning around anytime soon, and judging by Sony's consumer electronics in general I believe Sony is a headed down the same path.

1. Load times, who cares how long the load times are if the game is great?? Espescially if your going to jam for hours, is that a real issue??
2. This just my opinion, and I am a PS2 fan too....I think that Sony is in for a long road with the PS3 for several reasons. The price, the lack of hardware plus the fact that the Wii is so cheap at launch, and the FACT that the 360 is becoming more and more the system to beat on a daily basis. This week alone, GEARS, COD3,HAWK....add that to the killer apps that are out already (Splinter, Saints, NHL 07, GRAW, Table Tennis...etc, etc... And some of these games are reduced already (Outpost had TT for $14.99!!) GRAW $35, COD 2 $30, PGR $30.....how does Sony expect to do well, when there entering a shark tank with cuts all over them and no wetsuit on....LOL
And how about the HDTV and movie announcement Microsoft made??
Sony has to counter attack with something. no??

When you first sync a new wireless controller to your 360 it will ask if you want to pair; after a controller is paired it will not ask again. If the PS3 doesn't do this then you likely will have a hard time playing with 2 PS3's in one room.
The load times didn't look any different than my 360.

Coming in late but I think only #60 really got this...this video gave us really nothing at all as far as a picture of the load times of the system. What it did tell us is that, in order to play this game, you have to sit through a bajillion screens of logos and copyrights and so forth before you can play. That really should be what people are miffed about.
Most games take their longest load time right before you start playing the actual game, and this guy never got that far. Basically this seems worthless to me.

Guys... ur kidding me right? That wasn't ONE load time, that was the game booting, the game preoloading to the hard drive and then it loaded 1 match. How can you say it takes for ever since you can't even see the times between the credits videos (its not loading there) and when he actually starts the game.

How the fuck does Blake Snow still have a job at Joystiq? After that fiasco with the Wii processors, it seems that you guys have learned nothing, or don't care what bullshit you post on your site.
I may be crazy, but isn't the guy in the video say that he's making it to show "how quickly the PS3 loads", and he clearly explains the initial install (which takes about as much time as the FIRST load for Double Agent on 360) and then the game is loaded.
Snow, you are an idiot. Your hatred to all things Sony make you completely incompetent as a writer for anything other than an Xbox website, as you clearly pledge felty to MS. That said, it is ridiculous beyond beleif that you think that the initial load time here is any worse than most 360 games. Played Oblivion, Far Cry, Double Agent or GRAW?
You're an incredible jackass. Why Joystiq or Weblogs lets you write anything concerning PS3 is completely beyond me, as you're incapable of doing anything objective. You're worse than the worst fanboys who post here.
I don't know if you know this, but there are a few industry folks that come here. And we think you're the epitome of what's wrong with gaming journalism, if this can even be called that. Get off your high horse and stop trying to tilt everything to make people agree with your fucked up "Xbox is the end all, be all" perspective. There are 3 consoles in this gen, and all 3 are viable. Just because you have a hard on for one of them doesn't mean most people agree with you.
You're fucking with my livelyhood and putting false, negative bullshit in people's heads. Most of us don't appreciate potentially losing sales because uninformed consumers read your fictitious bile disguised as "news." You're not a journalist, you're a douchebag that gets to bash the system he doesn't own on a website. I look forward to your (hopefully very public) firing.

I didnt the load times were that bad compared to some others I've seen, even for current gen systems.
My biggest complaint, and the guy didnt even mention it, is the whole controller system. I have to hold a button and go through a menu just to turn my freaking controller off? That to me is far more annoying than the load times I saw or not having quit on the main game menu.
